| Michael Fenton was born London and spent his early life in Mexico and Guatemala, where he once sat at the feet of Aldous Huxley in ‘Fenton Country’ as mentioned in his Beyond the Mexique Bay. He returned to UK aged 9.
He lived for many years in Soho, London where he worked as an advertising copywriter and Assistant Night Film editor, writing poetry in his spare time, some of which was published by Nelson Pollard’s Mirror. Fenton later ran a Writers’ and Artists’ Management Company. He took part in the production of four films: Pleasure Hunt, Jessy, A Case for EW10 and The Little Island. He also worked in production for TV on such programmes as The Invisible Grockle, THE GAME – The A to Z of Sport and the well-remembered Emergency Ward 10. |

He spent some time as Managing Editor of Diplomat’s World and contributed to its Great Britain Exhibition in promoting British Creative Talent in New York, USA. More recently he has worked as an Adult Education Tutor for The Brighton Actors’ and Writers’ Groups and as a TEFL teacher in London, Brighton, Hove and Worthing. Sparing and un-fussed by verbiage but all the more resonant when skilfully plucking the appropriate adjective to reinforce a meaning – when we’re least expecting it – that’s Fenton’s style. There’s an almost meditative precision to many of these poems but one which never tips into expressive complacency. A selection which is moving, amusing, rueful and optimistic all at once; ‘The sun brings laughter to its shadows’ (‘A Step In Time’) sums it up perfectly – To read extracts please click here |
